Kini Care
Yay! You finally saved up enough money to buy the kini of your dreams but do you know how to properly care for it? High quality bikinis are investments! They’ll last as long as you care for them.
Kini don’ts:
- Don’t EVER machine wash or tumble dry a kini
- Don’t apply bleach or any harsh chemicals
- Don’t leave your kini out to dry in the sun
Kini do’s:
- Rinse your kini with cold fresh water immediately after each use
- Remove sand from your kini with patience
- Wash your kini with diluted laundry detergent in either a sink or bath tub
- Hang dry the kini in a shaded area
- Store your kinis in a bag after they are dry
After years of wearing different brands, prints, and styles I’ve found this kini care routine to be the most effective:
I’m hardly ever in chlorinated pools but if you were to enjoy a nice day in a pool I strongly advise you to immediately hose off with cold freshwater or hop into a cold shower to rinse your kini of any chemicals. Pools that have chemicals in it will cause your vibrant colored suits to fade over time! I’m really not a huge fan of pools but if you are keep this in mind.
I used to love the beach and hate sand. Now the only time sand bothers me is when it’s stuck in my kinis. I’m pretty conscious when wearing my more expensive suits at the beach because sand can be a HUGE pain in the ass to take out. However, the entire reason you bought the suit was to have fun and look good right? Good news is it isn’t impossible to remove sand but you’ll need a lot of patience and time. I usually let the faucet run as it fills my sink with cold water and gently stretch the fabric to pick out the tiny specks of sand. If you’re not crazy obsessed or too lazy to do so, find time while you Netflix and chill to remove it from your dry kini.
This may not be a popular opinion but I do wash my kinis with mild diluted laundry detergent. Your kinis are dirtier than you may think. You apply SPF to your body (hopefully), some of you may use tanning oil, you sweat, and other contaminants may come into contact with your kini. I turn the faucet on in my sink and pour the diluted laundry detergent for it to slightly bubble. I place two similar colored sets in it (I pre-separate my kinis by whites, brights, darks, and lights). I swish them around as if they were in a washer machine. I then rinse the kinis, gently wring (don’t forcefully twist your suit because you may ruin the elasticity of your kini), and hang them overnight in a shaded area. I use my shower door but be careful of rusting metals because they will stain your kini forever.
Remember how I said your kinis will fade if they’re constantly in contact with chemicals such as chlorine? The sun is not your friend either. I’ve had kinis (before I learned the tricks of the trade) fade from their gorgeous vibrant colors because I neglected to keep them in the shade when they were drying.
Finally, your kini is now washed and dried. In order to stay organized while keeping my kinis safe, I like to place them into pouches. Kini companies that send out their suits with bags that can be used for storage are the real MVP 🏆 Not only will this save you time when you spontaneously plan a beach day and need to find your kini set quick but it’ll protect your kini from gathering dust or other less desirable particles. Also, reusable bags are friendlier for the environment making this a win win scenario. If your kini purchase did not come with a pouch you can find them online cheap! It’s worth keeping your kinis and planet safe💕
