An Unexpected Trip
It was just another week of Summer bliss. I had just graduated from Florida International University and was eager to enjoy the post-grad life. I received a call from my boyfriend asking if I would be interested in visiting Nassau, Bahamas the following week. Who would say no? At this moment in time I was unaware of how unexpected this trip would truly be.
As we boarded our flight, I began to think of all the activities Atlantis has to offer. I thought, I will most definitely visit the beach, go on a few slides, and perhaps gamble. As soon as I arrived I dropped off my luggage and ventured off to find a place to eat. I was so giddy to be back at this wonderful resort. The first couple days were as expected, I had a fabulous time by the pool, tanned on the beach, and enjoyed delicious cocktails. Then one afternoon we ventured off to the marina where I saw yacht after yacht; my mouth dropped at the extravagance of these boats. To my surprise, one of the yachts was chartered to take us to visit the Grand Exumas, Staniel Cay, and Compass Cay.
I felt like a child again, a child who was just told by her parents that she was going to Disney World tomorrow! But this was grander than Disney World. I could not contain my excitement and was grinning ear to ear until I finally fell asleep. Waking up the next morning was a breeze. I rushed enthusiastically to meet the crew and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast they had prepared. The captain mentioned to us that the Grand Exumas would be our first destination and the lengthiest ride of the day.
I was astounded by the clarity of the waters as we neared the island. I could see in the distance a couple of pigs running into the ocean in anticipation of being fed by their visitors. With the captain’s permission we dove into the ocean and began to head towards shore. The crew handed us some snacks (diced apples and carrots) for our new friends to enjoy. I was in absolute Heaven having the opportunity to swim, feed, and pet the infamous swimming pigs of the Bahamas.
Our next stop was Staniel Cay. The bay was filled with nurse sharks swimming in harmony with stingrays. We ate at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, where I enjoyed conch fritters with a glass of champagne. I’m telling you, life was really rough this day. After finishing our meal we went to our final destination, Compass Cay.
To my amazement, I enjoyed my experience with the friendly nurse sharks of Compass Cay more than the pigs of the Grand Exumas. Maybe it was the fact that swimming and petting the sharks gave me more of an adrenaline rush. I have always admired sharks from a very young age and am an avid ‘Shark Week’ viewer. Overall, it was a wonderful trip that I will always remember! Crossing off two of my bucketlist wishes on the same day was an amazing feeling.
